Purgatorio follows an ensemble of troubled spirits dancing to salvation in Club Purgatorio, a surrealist techno dreamscape. Inspired by Dante Alighieri’s Divina Commedia and developed in Tuscany, this devised physical theatre piece explores desire, dependency and divinity through ecstatic movement. It invites the audience to press where it hurts, live their darkest fantasies and then to dance it off after.

Abril
(she/her)
Abril is an interdisciplinary artist currently focusing on theater and film work. She was born in Quito, Ecuador, to a Cuban mother and Ecuadorian father, but mostly grew up in Charleston, SC. In 2020, she graduated from the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities from their Drama program. Currently, she is pursuing her BFA in Theater Arts with a concentration in Physical Theater and a minor in Film Studies from Coastal Carolina University. This year she has been continuing her studies in Physical Theatre at the Accademia dell'Arte in Tuscany, Italy.

Alex Austin

Alexander Austin is a performer and online goblin. He officially studied Theater with a focus on acting at Muhlenberg College but he unofficially studied clowning and the absurd. His passions are cooking, eating, and finding really good places to eat as well as performance, art, video games, and internet culture. He is deeply interested in the intersectionality of Art, Technology, and Identity and hopes to develop both his and others' understanding of all three through advocacy, performance, and teaching. He has performed in some stuff, taught some people and is super excited to be participating in Purgatorio with tha boyz.

Anne Shook

Anne Shook (they/she) is excited to be joining Boyz with Apple in their upcoming production of Purgatorio. They are an actor, director, poet and recent graduate of DePaul University (BFA in Acting and BA in Communications & Media). Notable credits from The Theatre School include Bernadette in Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons, Jes in 715 Pearl Street, and Catherine in A View From the Bridge. Anne enjoys yoga, spending time on the beach, and advocating for survivors of sexual violence and LGBTQ rights.

Balfour Clark
Balfour is a professional actor from New Haven, Connecticut. Most recently, Balfour played Prince Hal in Henry IV, Part 1 at the Prague Shakespeare Company. He is incredibly excited to be working with Boyz With Apple this summer!

Frances Rippy

Frances Rippy is a director, producer, dramaturg, performer, and cooperative theatre-maker originally from Louisville, KY. They hope to create complex work infused with a sense of humor and play which inspires, excites, and expands our collective imagination. They are passionate about arts accessibility and ways to make theatre a more environmentally sustainable practice. They are currently studying physical theatre at the Accademia dell'Arte in Arezzo, Italy.

Helen Magowan
Helen Magowan is a writer and documentary filmmaker originally from Colorado now residing in Brooklyn, NY. Her work focuses on themes of loneliness and connectedness. She holds a BA in English and Film from Vassar College and is passionate about pottery, public transportation, and the revolution.

Julianna Austin

Julianna is an actor and artist from the Hudson Valley of New York. A proud queer and Filipina-American artist, she is a recent BFA graduate of Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. They were also fortunate to be a part of the original Kabaret Purgatorio while studying physical theatre at the Accademia dell'Arte in Arezzo, Italy. Notable recent credits include: One Day Down (Marion, SheNYC award), You On the Moors Now (Elizabeth Bennet), Athena (Mary Wallace) Aside from performing, Julianna is also a pole aerialist, fight director, and casting assistant. Her interdisciplinary work can be seen with T Creatives Casting, Sordelet Inc., LaTiDo Productions, Southern Plains Productions, and more.

Naomi Friedman (they/them)
New York based collage artist, Naomi Friedman, has been working through the medium of physical and digital collage art for the past few years. Through their work with social justice and artist nonprofits, such as the Youth Justice Network, the Newburgh LGBTQ+ Center, and the Williamstown Theater Festival, Naomi has worked to combine their passion for prison activism with a commitment to emergent political and artistic praxis. Naomi dedicates themselves to centering found object art and community testimony in their work—including the curation of materials and resources, as well as the creative process.

Lily Anna Berman

Lily Anna Berman is a Chicago-based designer/director/producer for theater, exhibits, and immersive experiences. She has worked with the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Chicago Scenic Studios, Original X Productions, Northlight Theater, Theater Row, New York. Classical Theater, and more. With Sage Creative Group, Lily serves as a project manager and set dresser for immersive experiences and touring exhibitions, including Harry Potter: Magic at Play, The Office Experience, The Friends Experience, and Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea. Lily is a graduate of LaGuardia HS of the Arts (Acting Major), Vassar College (Drama & Political Science Majors), and the Moscow Art Theater.

Lou Sydel

Lou Sydel is a choreographer whose work draws from the study of gesture as well as experiences of transness, imagining dance as a living journal for a body moving towards new directions. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College with a degree in interdisciplinary performance and anthropology, and has studied physical theater at LaGuardia Arts HS and Accademia Dell’Arte. He is currently developing site specific work for the WestFest all over Westbeth series as well as PortFringe in Portland, ME. Lou has performed in Dances by Very Young Choreographers with Ellen Robbins at New York Live Arts, as well as the Celebration Barn, the Teatro Virginian, Norte Maar Dance at Socrates, Sokolow Theater / Dance Ensemble, Rascal Arts at Theater.

Padra Crisafulli (they/them)
Padra Crisafulli (they/them) is a theatre artist who bends time, space, and reality to tell stories. They hail from… well, they moved around a lot as a kid between Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Texas. With a BFA in directing from Carnegie Mellon University, they have created, choreographed, scored, and directed works from movement pieces and operas to performance art installations and radio dramas. Their recent work has focused on the surreal impact of loneliness on one’s perception of reality.

Paola Castañeda

Paola Castañeda is a designer, stitcher and tactile artist from Los Ángeles, CA. They are constantly working with new mediums to construct crafts that explore innovative and sustainable ways to create art and build community. Paola’s identity as a queer, first-generation Mexican-American artist drives them to seek representation and accessibility in the arts for all - a theme often explored in their work.

Sarah Hansel

Sarah Hansel is a class of 2024 member at Muhlenberg college with double majors in theater and dance and just returned from the Accademia Dell'Arte's Spring 2023 Dance Program in Arezzo, Italy. She is experienced with choreography, costume design, and special fx-makeup. Sarah also owns her own handmade jewelry store and sells with the collective and Etsy.

Theo Duclo

Theo Duclo is a trans and queer actor, theatre-maker, puppeteer, and aspiring clown from Tucson, Arizona, based in New York. His work seeks to infuse queerness, abolitionist praxis, a delight in the absurd, Shakespeare, and always always love. Theo received his BA in drama from Vassar College with a focus in queer and prison studies. Recent roles at Vassar include Luke (Mosquitoes), Orlando (As You Like It), and Stanley (A Streetcar Named Desire). Training: London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), Powerhouse Theater Training Program, Sandglass Puppetry Intensive Training. He is so excited to be a part of this project.

Lena Pepe

Lena Pepe is an actor, theater-maker and aspiring physical theater performer who is so excited to be working with Boyz With Apple this summer! Lena’s Off-Broadway credits: Cornelia Street by Simon Stephens and Mark Eitzel at the Atlantic Theater Company. Lena graduated from Vassar College with a BA in Drama and a concentration in Russian studies. Educational Credits: Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams (Blanche) Mosquitoes by Lucy Kirkwood (Jenny), Heroes of the Fourth Turning by Will Arbery (Emily). Training: Atlantic Acting School Summer Intensive, London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA), Anya Saffir (acting), Gigi Buffington (voice) and the NHSI Cherubs Program. Lena is a New York City based actor. She owes everything to her family and friends, and strives to bring an immense amount of love to all of her work.
